Description

Location:

The Old Famine Road, Doolough, County Mayo, Ireland

“Black shawls on wooden pegs behind the door

A wisp of peaty smoke curls from the fire

Small barefoot children linger in the yard

While mother’s needle sews with fingers worn.

A pot of black potatoes on the hob

Spews forth a rancid steam on hissing ash

A meagre fare for bellies stretched and sore

But mother’s done her best

Can do no more”
